Marlboro Man dies

The quintessential all-american “man’s man” – The Marlboro Man – has died. Actor Eric Lawson, the ruggedly handsome, iconic cowboy - the global face of Marlboro cigarettes and role model to generations of impressionable young men, passed away recently at his home in San Luis Obispo, California at the age of 72 from (not surprisingly) lung disease.

Lawson started smoking at the age of 14. Becoming an actor as he grew up, his habit stood him in good stead as he subsequently landed the coveted job as the “face man” for Marlboro. His face and the iconic brand became synonymous throughout the 70’s and early 80’s. In his later life, as the world slowly became more aware of the dangers of smoking, he appeared in an anti-smoking commercial parodying the Marlboro Man and even went on to discuss the negative effects of smoking on the American TV show, Entertainment Tonight. He is survived by his wife, Susan.
